Samajik Seva Sadan (SSS) began itself with a non-formal education centre at Banjhikusum a Juanga tribal hamlet, in 1982 by Montfort Religious Brothers under the Dioceses of Sambalpur, Odisha. The basic philosophy of this organization is "Serving Fellowmen is Worshiping God" with Motto of creating “awareness and progress" to make the people masters of their own destiny by working together and achieving it with their fellow beings.
From 1983, marked by establishment of rapport with the communities and better understanding of the magnitude of the problems, issues affecting the communities, SSS extended its service to 15 more hamlets around Banjhikusum by 1985. The Organization got itself Registered in 1985 under the Societies Registration Act to become a legal entity to promote value based education for children, Mother & child and community health, organizing and skill development of Youth & Women, saving & credit programs for ST & SC women with Income Generation Activities to alleviate poverty. Rehabilitation of Cured Leprosy Patients and community water resource creation and management through Watershed, Pollution Control and Environment Protection through Bio-Farming has been taken up.
In 1986 SSS was registered under FCRA, in 1987 Registered under Section 12 – A of the IT Act 1961, and in 2007 received 80G from Income Tax Department to receive donations to carry out the objectives of the Society with 50% Tax Exemption for the donors.
